How\u00a0to\u00a0help new\u00a0secondary students meet the\u00a0new, increased standards & exam expectations<\/strong><\/p>\n The underlying aim of\u00a0this\u00a0session\u00a0is\u00a0to\u00a0help the\u00a0fifteen-year-olds who will be starting the\u00a0reformed secondary school as\u00a0of\u00a0Sept 1 2019 cope with the\u00a0increased expectations, formulated in\u00a0the\u00a0new\u00a0Core Curriculum. As we all know, these will ultimately result in\u00a0the\u00a0format of\u00a0the\u00a0Matura\u00a02023. In\u00a0view\u00a0of\u00a0everything we know\u00a0about these teenagers\u2019 competencies as\u00a0well as\u00a0deficits, we\u2019ll need to\u00a0refresh our overall approach, our daily teaching strategies, and the\u00a0tools we use. The question, as\u00a0always, is\u00a0how?<\/p>\n That\u2019s where my session\u00a0comes in. Based on\u00a0an\u00a0in-depth analysis\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0new\u00a0standards of\u00a0achievement and the\u00a0skills needed to\u00a0meet them, I\u2019ll argue that our learners will need a\u00a0new\u00a0blend of\u00a0skills, linguistic and conceptual, to\u00a0deal with more demanding texts and novel task types. These new, higher-order thinking skills (HOTs) must in\u00a0turn inform the\u00a0way our learners read, listen, SZCZEG\u00d3\u0141Y:<\/p>\n
\nand react to\u00a0texts, in\u00a0order to\u00a0mediate information, both within\u00a0the\u00a0target language and across the\u00a0two languages. This\u00a0in\u00a0turn will have profound consequences for the\u00a0choice of\u00a0activity types and exercise formats so that we can\u00a0squeeze out all the\u00a0linguistic and cognitive potential of\u00a0texts, spoken and written.
